The everyday differences
Some apps offer both local and online modes. Check the mode you are using, not just the name on the app.
| Question | Local chat | Cloud chat |
|---|---|---|
| Connection needed? | Not for answers after setup | Usually for each new answer |
| Where are words processed? | On your phone | By the selected service |
| What does the heavy work? | Your phone | The service’s computers |
| Always current or correct? | No | No |
When there is little signal
Once set up successfully, a local text model can help with drafts and ideas without a server connection. Downloading the model still needs internet. Cloud chat usually needs a connection for a new response.
Where your words go
Palmkin’s local chat processes text on the phone, without a hidden switch to cloud AI. Cloud chat sends your question and selected attachments to a provider. Its storage and training rules depend on the service and your settings.
Storage, battery and waiting
Local AI needs storage, working memory and battery power. A larger model or longer conversation can ask more of your phone. Cloud AI moves much of that work elsewhere, but still uses your connection and screen.
Choose for the task
A local model can be useful for rewriting and brainstorming. A remote service may suit more demanding tasks if its data terms work for you. Neither automatically knows today’s facts or replaces professional advice.
